Bakenpark is the home of the Bambelela Ministry of YWAM Bethlehem since 2010. Prior to that, Bambelela had been working in the Location, especially among the Sothos living in the deppressed areas and poor housing conditions. Later, our former leaders working in the same area under a church took over the ministry. And God opened a new place for us in Bakenpark. We continued to do the same things that we were doing for the Sotho people and then the Afrikaans-speaking colored community also joined us.
Mostly unemployed men/women, out-of-school youth and children come to Bambelela. It could be that their main reason for coming is to receive food and other forms of donations in kind but we choose not to prematurely judge their motives. We do what we are called to do and that is to speak about Jesus and their need of salvation and to help them grow in their spiritual lives. Tuesdays and Thursdays are regular days for us to meet them. Other days are flexible and we are kept busy especially when we have visiting teams and volunteers working with us.
Through the leadership of Miguel Godoy whose passion is to work among the poor communities, the Bambelela Center is always improving. It is equipped with basic facilities for cooking, training and playground for the kids. When schools are running, our students and leaders and visiting teachers usually go to Bakenpark for hands-on ministry and at same time fulfilling local outreach credits.
